Mapping Biryani in the City of Joy

Bengalis are biryani lovers. It's that simple. We don't need special occasions to eat biryani. In fact, there are so many biryani joints in the city, that everyday is biryani day if we want it to be.

If you ask most people where you get the best Kolkata Biryani, they'll probably either say Aminia, or Arsalan.

But, beyond these, there's a plethora of flavours to try out.

I started by first mind-mapping the biryani joints I had discovered, with the help of landmarks, and main roads.

And then seeing how they fit on an actual map of Kolkata.

The map was too complex for new comers, so I decided to begin abstracting it.

I focused on the roads once again, the parks, and the Ganga.

And then quickly plotting the metro lines, and biryani joints.

I needed some inspiration for the visual design.

And even checked out islamic artwork.

I tried a playful style of annotation to start of with.

But wanted to try something more 'Nawabi'.

After a few iterations this is what I came up with.
